Paula's Session: Character, Substance and Style - Helping Leaders to really Engage, Inspire and Move People to act
Executive Presence has long been acknowledged as a critical factor in leadership. In fact in a recent study Executive Presence was ranked the No.2 reason why leaders seek out Executive Coaching. However, its definition is often mysterious, people struggle to capture what it really means and the default assumption is to equate presence with charisma and presentation skills. While these factors are important, they make up only a small piece of the "executive presence puzzle" that helps leaders achieve sustained levels of success. Using the Bates ExPI model, the session will look at the three dimensions of Executive Presence 1) Character,
2) Substance and 3) Style. We will focus on the key facets of Executive Presence that matter most to Leaders during this turbulent time of change and shift to a completely virtual world.
1)Character - Is the dimension that focuses on building Trust, we will explore the facet of Humility, how can you connect more with people by letting your guard down and acknowledging your own vulnerabilities? How do you demonstrate to your team virtually that everyone deserves respect and everyone deserves to be heard - and are you really listening?
2)Substance – Is the dimension that builds credibility, we will refer to the importance of demonstrating practical wisdom and communicating your vision with your key stakeholders. We will Prioritise the facet of Composure – defined by Bates as “proving to be steady in a crisis, able to bring calm and focus others” are you able to move your team from a reactive to a proactive frame of mind?
3)Style- Is the dimension that inspires action, it is the dimension most associated with Executive Presence you will learn how to have much more impact when communicating or presenting virtually. When everything has been reduced to small box on a screen it is more crucial than ever you are aware of how you connect with people through clarity of message and your physical presence. We will look at the facets of Intentionality and Appearance.
Overall this session will provide you with practical insights and techniques to improve your own level of Executive Presence to get the results you want in your organisation.
